A Geography themed adventure trip to Kenya

Here's a suggested 9-10 day itinerary, from £1395

Day 1: Arrival

Arrival in Nairobi, transfer to accommodation by private coach.

Day 2: The Great Rift Valley

Hell's Gate National Park: on the drive from Nairobi, take in the view over the constructive plate boundary where the African Plate is slowly splitting into the Somali and Nubian plates and widening the valley by almost a centimetre annually. Arrive at the camp and switch to mountain bikes for an exhilarating tour of the park, cycling amongst zebra and giraffes. Enjoy a campfire and excellent food with possible sightings of hippos.

Day 3: Geothermal energy

Visit to Olkaria Geothermal Plant and hot springs: students will see how the natural geothermal energy can be harnessed to generate electricity, before relaxing in the hot springs.
Steam to water: visit a local village harnessing steam vents to condense into a water supply in this dry area.
Transfer to accommodation near Maasai Mara.

Day 4: Maasai Mara

Full day game drive: A visit to Kenya would not be complete without a day exploring its most famous game reserve. Split into smaller safari vehicles for a memorable journey into the savannah, where students can either observe the impact of tourism or cheetahs, rhinos, elephants, lions, and if they are lucky, perhaps a leopard or two. Learn about wildlife conservation from a park ranger.
Sleep listening to the roar of elephants after a hearty dinner of nyoma choma (Kenyan barbecue).

Day 5: Maasai Mara

Cultural Tourism: learn how the Maasai manage tourism and their cultural heritage in a sustainable community-based way.
Transfer to Nairobi.

Day 6: Nairobi

Plastic recycling: understand how organisations are finding innovative ways to break down the mountain of waste polluting Kenya.
Visit Nairobi's CBD to study land use and find interesting souvenirs in local markets.

Day 7: Desert Dunes

Transfer to Watamu by domestic flight.
Mambrui Desert: ride camels across the spectacular dunes and see how wildlife has adapted to live in this environment.

Day 8: Mangroves

Mida Creek: take a boat tour to explore the mangroves of Mida Creek and learn about their importance in protecting the coral reefs in the Indian Ocean.
Gedi Ruins: visit the UNESCO-listed remnants of a medieval Swahili settlement on the coast.

Day 9: Coasts

Watamu Beach: enjoy the white sands and turquoise waters of this famous beach.  Snorkel in the waters of Turtle Bay (part of the Watamu-Malindi Marine Reserve) to see the coral reef and its inhabitants. If you are lucky you may even see dolphins...
Opportunity to try a kitesurfing lesson if weather conditions allow.

Day 10: Return

Transfer to Nairobi airport by domestic flight, return flight to home country.

Extra activities can be added on travel days depending on flight timings, and the entire itinerary can be shortened, lengthened or customised to suit your preferences.
